Ram eTorque Mild Hybrid Technology

At the 2018 North American International Auto Show (known also as the Detroit Auto Show), Ram pulled the cover off its brand new Ram eTorque Mild Hybrid Technology, which leads to better fuel economy, as well as quick torque delivery for greater payload and towing capacity.

What is Ram 1500's eTorque Mild Hybrid Technology?

New for the 2019 and 2020 Ram 1500 is an innovative eTorque Mild Hybrid system that is proven to improve fuel economy without sacrificing power, torque, or capability, which is ideal in a world where gas prices always trend upward. These modern trucks require no additional effort by the driver and are part of both the Pentastar V-6 and legendary HEMI® V-8 powertrains.

The new Ram eTorque Mild Hybrid system is a replacement for the traditional alternator. It sports a belt-driven motor generator unit that executes several different functions.

How Does Ram 1500's eTorque Mild Hybrid Technology Work?

A 48-volt battery pack works with the motor generator to create:

  • a seamless start/stop function;
  • a short-duration torque addition to the engine crankshaft in particular driving conditions; and,
  • brake energy regeneration to increase efficiency and responsiveness.

With the engine is running and the truck ready, Ram eTorque's motor generator unit delivers 48-volt current to a 430 watt-hour lithium-ion Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC)-Graphite battery. The battery pack on these Ram pickups includes a 3-kilowatt DC-to-DC converter. This holds the battery's charge and converts 48 volts to 12 volts so that power can be use to power Ram 1500's accessories and charge its conventional 12-volt lead-acid battery.

About the size of a small suitcase, the air-cooled battery plant is mounted to the interior rear wall of Ram 1500's cabin. The battery pack's case is insulated to hush the noise generate by the dual cooling fans. Cooling air is then drawn from the truck interior and released through the built-in cabin exhausters.

Because of its greater efficiency in extreme temperatures, both the V6 engine and V8 engine with Ram eTorque technology will keep a traditional 12-volt starter motor, which is ideal for cold starts and the initial start of the day.

Beyond spinning the engine for restarts, the eTorque also recaptures energy during deceleration and braking to recharge the battery pack. Further, Ram eTorque also bolsters the driving experience of the 2019 and 2020 Ram 1500 with additional torque to the crankshaft during gear changes, which minimizes noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH).

There is a slight variation in the Ram eTorque motor generator between the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 applications to optimize performance in both powertrains. The Pentastar sports a liquid-cooled Ram eTorque unit mounted on the front of the engine. The HEMI V-8 features an air-cooled Ram eTorque unit that is mounted toward the top of the engine where a traditional alternator would be located.

Regardless of which eTorque motor generator unit you have, they both use a pair of belt tensioners to ensure that the 8-rib drive belt stays tight when the unit is generating electricity or adding torque to the crankshaft.

It's worth noting that the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 will also be available without the eTorque system.

Ram 1500 Hybrid Technology Warranty Information

The 2019 Ram 1500 comes backed by a five-year/60,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, which covers the cost of all parts and labor needed for repairing a covered powertrain component – engine, transmission and drive system. Additionally, it covers any necessary towing to the nearest Ram dealer. For users who sell their trucks during the warranty period, the coverage is transferable to the new owner.

The standard three-year/36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty delivers bumper-to-bumper coverage for the 2019 and 2020 Ram 1500 all across North America, from the body to the electrical system.

Further, as part of the Basic Limited Warranty, the Federal Emission Warranty covers the following parts of the Ram eTorque system for eight years/80,000 miles, whichever comes first.

  • Belt Driven Hybrid Starter Generator Assembly
  • Catalytic Converter
  • Powertrain Control Module
  • Power Pack Unit - 48 Volts

The "Warranty Coverage at A Glance" graph in the 2019 or 2020 Ram 1500 Standard Factory Warranty Booklet provides an overview perspective of the;above described eTorque warranties on the Ram 1500 from 1 year/12,000 miles through 8 years/80,000 miles.

Ram Hybrid Benefits

Hybrid vehicles are great for the environment and your wallet. Here are some of the benefits of owning a Ram hybrid:

  1. emissions reduction
  2. fuel economy improvement
  3. increased power and torque
  4. regenerative braking system captures energy that would otherwise be lost as heat, and stores it in the battery to help power the electric motor
  5. start/stop technology shuts off the gas engine when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing emissions

How does a Dodge Hybrid work?

Dodge hybrids use a combination of gasoline and electric power to run the vehicle. The gas engine is used to start the car and to provide power when needed, such as when accelerating. The electric motor is used for low-speed driving and to provide power when the gas engine is not being used, such as during braking.

The dodge hybrid system automatically switches between the gas and electric power sources depending on driving conditions. For example, when the car is stopped at a red light, the electric motor will power the vehicle. When the driver accelerates, the gas engine will take over.

The dodge hybrid system is designed to be more fuel efficient than a traditional gas-powered car. The use of electric power helps to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy.
